It is not recognized. • Also tried to boot from an USB drive with a small Linux OS, but still the same error.
• I have ran the tests under the F2 menu. All tests passed. • I removed the HDD, put it in a external case, hooked it up to a different computer.
It gets recognized, so I know the HDD still works. • One tip that I found on the forum was to format it and then put it back in the laptop. • Tried to change the boot order, tried to exclude the drive from the boot order, tried to boot only from usb, tried to reset boot settings but none of these worked. As far as I can tell from the stickers the Notebook was delivered with Vista out of the box, then later had XP as an operating system.

It is remotely possible that the hard drive is bad, but that shouldn't prevent you from booting from another device, I wouldn't think. It should boot from a DVD for example. Windows would load the files, and then error out because it couldn't find a hard drive to install on.
