I've been wrestling with installing a Tekonsha Prodigy electric trailer brake controller in my new '02 GMC Sierra Denali. I bought the Tekonsha wiring adapter that goes direclty from the Prodigy to the vehicle fuse panel under the dash. The problem is the Prodigy does not work and gives an error indication that the trailer isn't hooked up. I've connected to both my trailer and another new trailer with the same results. The 'blue' wire at the rear connector isn't getting any voltage when the brakes are applied. The Tekonsha folks and trailer dealer blame my truck wiring. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen a case where the factory wiring was off.
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Mount the bracket for the round connector on the bumper if that's where it is to be installed. Some hitches have built in brackets. Run all wires from the harness through bracket (some hitch brackets may have to be cut to allow various connectors to pass through). Connect the WHITE.
Couple notes: the 'maxi fuse' is installed and the everything on the trailer lights inside/out work except the electric brakes. Dell Xps 410 Lan Driver more. The trailer dealer looked at using the factory trailer package harness with the harness that comes with the Prodigy, but it would just wire up the same way as the special wiring connector that I bought.
Thanks, -Ken. Other than just making sure the blue wire is on an AUX post, thats about it! I have another brand but I just plugged it in, in the box in the drivers side floor and it works! My truck did not come with the 8 wire harness so I got everything from the dealer and did it myself, so I am not sure if the blue wire comes connected at the AUX post or not, since mine wasnt there to begin with! You need to make sure the blue wire is getting power under the hood, if it is and it still doesnt read at the rear, it is broke in 2 somewhere along the way or not in the plug good! If it isn't your fuse you need to get under the trailer and check voltage near the wheel, normally there are splices near the axle and manufacturers tend to use the little blue scotchlok splices that are always causing trouble.Hope this helps. Also, like Shaners mentioned check your ground, but if your connection is wired properly your ground should be hard wired through your trailer connection.Gun Definately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to replace those little blue snap things all over my trailer!!!!! Now I watch out for them on anything I get!!!
The ground should be wired into the plug too, I didnt know they still used the trailer to ball as a ground, that has some funny effects sometimes!
Videos are provided as a guide only. Refer to manufacturer installation instructions and specs for complete information. If you are throwing around the idea of installing a brake controller or needed one yesterday this video will show you step by step what is required. Many trucks come with a factory provided brake control wiring harness which is usually tucked into the glove compartment. On this video we will demonstrate how to install the Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller using this OEM harness.
Since this truck has the tow package the only hardwiring required is between the factory harness and the controller. If you want to eliminite all hardwiring and make installation even faster you can opt to purchase the Tekonsha custom wiring harness if one is available for your vehicle. We are going to use the actual factory tow package, here is the plug that goes with the tow package. There is an adapter that goes straight from the brake controller to the tow package, in case you do have this part and want to use it we will show you how. To begin, there is one major difference here, on the brake controller if you look at the wire harness that comes with it, there are four wires for it. On the factory tow package there are five wires.
The difference is this one wire which is the illumination feed. No one has told me the reason for its existence, so we will ignore it since all the functions we need are with the remaining four wires. So when you have this harness, and this applies to a lot of pickup trucks with the factory harness, with the illumination feed just fold it back and forget about it. We will make our connections, it is pretty simple since the instructions will tell what goes to what and what color is used for function on the brake controller.
For example blue is going to be for the brake lead that goes out back and on the factory harness it will tell you what one does what. It is labeled here to trailer electric brakes. We will follow that all the way to the wires. We will start with the blue, and you can connect them with quick connects or crimp connections like we are doing here which makes for a sleeker install.
Now we will do our black wire which goes to our twelve volt power supply. Labeled on the factory harness is wire feed from battery, so we will hook up this red to that black. Next we will do our red wire here on our brake controller, which goes to our stop light feed so look for that on the factory harness which is the green wire. Lastly is our white wire on our brake controller which the ground wire. The white wire on the factory harness is labeled ground as well so we will connect those together. Now we will tape up our connections, make it look nice and we will install it on our truck.
We are going to mount our brake controller which is traditionally mounted to the dash here which is kind of at a steep angle. However, there is a nice piece of metal here for a computer port which we will put it right next to that and we will have just enough room to install and enough steel for this screw here and we will put one in the middle on this side. We should be pretty well set. Now we will clamp it into place and mark out our holes. Next we will use a couple of self tapping screws and go right through that. Next we are going to plug our wiring into our port which is hidden behind the computer port here. It is above and pointing out that way, basically it is above this bracket right here.
So we will go ahead and plug this in. Now we will plug it into the brake controller and install the screws that hold it in place. The next step is to take care of this excess wiring here, we will bundle it up and zip tie to somewhere safe underneath the dash. One note is that we left that illumination feed wire open in case a customer wants or needs to use it for anything else. Aside from testing the brake controller, our install is complete. Red House Painters Shock Me Ep Rarest. That covers our install of part number 90185, the prodigy brake controller on our 2004 Ford F150.
