So i bought the new maps for my 60CSX and spent 4+ hours trying to download it last night. Several observations on this process: 1.
TOPOgraphic Maps - GPS Maps. Garmin 24K Topo U.S. Northeast microSD/SD Northeast Region. With Garmin’s new BirdsEye US and Canada Topo. Since my last update on free 1:24K-equivalent topo maps for Garmin GPS units from GPSFileDepot, there’s been a huge explosion in the number of states covered.
It's SLOW, even by Garmin standards. I downloaded the City Navigator update and a system update in the time it took for the TOPO map to get to%50. Before someone offers up that it's on my side, my internet connection is 30MB and the PC is not the issue either. There is no way to download to PC and install into MapSource like there used to be. Bosch Fla 206 Software there. So after 4 hours, the web interface gets to%100, but doesn't change from an amber circle to a green circle or ever show that this worked and is installed.
When i eject the unit from PC and try to access maps from 60csx, it tells me that it's unable to unlock the maps. The map is not automatically picked up by MapSource after the install, so i can't install it the old way 5. The purchase is not shown on the my products page from mygarmin.com, but does show up on the my maps, but again with no way to install to PC 6. The kbase article () in garmin support doesn't work as there is nowhere on mygarmin to perform step 2. GRRRR, why must Garmin make buying things from them so DIFFICULT!?!? Hello Drick, 2 weeks ago I bought TOPO US 24K WEST DVD ver2.0. I put the DVD in and the computer did the rest with no problems.
It did take over an hour to load everything but that was because the software automatically installs all the maps onto my harddrive so that I do not have to keep the DVD loaded to access the maps. I opened MapSource and found the new 24K maps were available from the dropdown menu. Then clicking >Utilities >Manage Map Products >I saw that my new 24K TOPO was not lockable so no worries there.
I loaded a large chunk of the new maps for my area into my 705 and they work without having to mess with the unlock business. You might consider uninstalling and then start over fresh and see what happens. I just walked away after 10 minutes and left the computer alone to do its thing. Thanks for the note. Also, the maps are 3.5GB so I assume you have a 4GB memory card in your 60csx?all i have are 1/2/8 GB microsd, will the the 8gb work? Looking at kbase (article below) here it's not clear to me what the answer is. Question: What is the largest SD/microSD card supported by an expandable memory device?
Answer: There are several products within the Outdoor and Fitness families that can accept expandable memory cards in SD or microSD format. These cards, for some devices, can be used to store active track-log data, however, all expandable memory devices can utilize the additional memory to store MapSource products. There are limitations to the size of SD/microSD card used and to the number of detailed mapping segments that can be recognized by a device. If at the most recent unit software version, these limitations are: * There is no limitation to the size of SD/microSD card used but the device will only recognize 4GB of detailed mapping * Each expandable memory device will be able to recognize up to 2,025 detailed mapping segments If 2,025 detailed mapping segments are loaded to an SD/microSD card but does not reach 4GB worth of data, the unit will not show any more detailed mapping than what is provided by the mapping segments. Last modified on. So I found the maps that are installed on my computer from the TOPO WEST DVD.
This is what I got when I clicked 'properties'. 3.41GB 10885 files 1816 folders Check this link. It has info on memory for the 60csx. Looks like the 60 is limited to the 2GB. Also a warning to NOT use the SanDisk Ultra II 1Gb.
After you explain your memory problem to Customer Service I expect Garmin would be able to cancel the download version and put your money (plus any extra from you if needed) towards the DVD version. You will be very happy with that one. Everything will be in MapSource and you can select whatever amount of maps you want and send them to the SD card. It seems silly that they treat map management so differently between new TOPO and old TOPO/CN. With the latter two, you can manage it all from MapSource, which makes sense.
With the former, you can't do anything. Not strange at all. It is the same product as comes preloaded on an SD card. Both of those products are different from the Mapsource product that comes on DVD.
On the Overview tab of any map product that includes the various formats to purchase, you will see this link. The key information is contained in the description for 'Downloadable Content': 'Similar to the pre-programmed datacards, this mapping is not available on your computer for use in planning routes.' The SD and download versions contain the compiled maps.
They are the same compiled map file Mapsource would create if you had the Mapsource DVD version, selected those maps and selected to Transfer To Device. Mapsource can create those files for your device but it can't read them. That actually makes sense because it doesn't need to. It already has the source maps that it creates the compiled map files from. You can use the SD card maps or downloaded maps in Basecamp on your PC once they are installed on your device and your device is connected to Basecamp.ken. I'm having same issue today. Six hours to download with 'mapinstall'?
ANd it is stuck on 6 hours so i guess i will never be done. RONBONESTER, I don't know if you are talking about the same thing as the other guy. He was talking about downloading a new map product from Garmin's web site. It sounds like you are talking about transfering maps from MapInstall to your device. That's a very different issue.
As far as the difference in transfer time between Topo and City Navigator, that's a simple question to answer. Topo contains probably four times as much information in it. When I bought my first set of maps for Canada from Garmin, City Navigator didn't fill one CD. Topo Canada took four!
And City Navigator was for all of North America. Topo Canada only covered Canada.ken.
