Quark announced the release of, which “fuses” tools for print and web design. The long awaited 5.0 features “high-profile features” and capabilities that include tables, layers, webpage design tools, and xml export.

However, the latest release is not carbonized for mac os x. I'm not a print layout designer and have only used quark a few times, but i wonder about the business strategy here. Adobe released indesign 2.0 that runs native on os x.

Indesign 2.0 also sports table creation and xml import/export capabilities like the latest quark release. Quark costs us$899 for the full version and $299 for the upgrade. On the other hand, indesign costs $699 for the full version, $99 for a special 90-day upgrade, and $149 thereafter.

I read quite a few posts on various news boards and it looks like the mac community is rallying behind “quark killer hopeful” indesign. With indesign's tight integration with acrobat, illustrator, and photoshop, i wonder if quark can retain its marketshare. If adobe can get photoshop ported over to os x, i think many print shops might be giving indesign another look. Rob note: ah but when will we see photoshop for os x?

It's seemingly taking adobe forever to port that app. User comments 53 comment(s) what? (1:06pm est thu jan 24 2002) why no os-x, are they mad? And wheres macromedia flash or director.

– by give us x quark sucks (3:07pm est thu jan 24 2002) thats why no osx – by – -© hrmm (3:52pm est thu jan 24 2002) the xpress team is not known for its innovation nor “pushing envelopes” by any stretch of the imagination. They still don't see any reason behind revamping the display engine with anti-aliased vectors and pixel-for-pixel raster representation for embedded images!

(please tell me i'm wrong, i haven't been able to pull up a 5.0 screenshot to verify) the 5.0 'xml export' feature is a cool function, i'll admit. I would be entirely surprised if the slothware engineers at quark were able to push out a gm copy of quark 5.0 x before december.

It's a far cry from a “simple carbon port” for those legacy-herding cowboys it's as if they developed their own set of api's back in the stone age and are too afraid (read: 'play-it-safe' managerial staff) to shift over to the apple api's (for instance 4.x still uses black and white menus/menu bar/palletes a-la os 6:p) *sigh* how much farther do those guys think their market dominance is going to float them? – by gropo err: – -® (3:54pm est thu jan 24 2002) even though i tend to agree with you on this one, that was still a waste of electrons – by gropo photoshop for osx (5:53pm est thu jan 24 2002) april. May at the latest. As to why quark is still around, it's more of a testament to how lazy designers can be.

I can't tell you how many times i hear designers bitching about quark, but when you tell them to use indesign they say they can't because they don't know indesign and they know quark. God forbid they should learn a new app. It really is quite pathetic.

– by kyle lets all work together (7:47pm est thu jan 24 2002) if it's an absolute issue for those who want to vent mac or pc platform comparisons, then do so. That way, we can have constuctive crticism and/or comments instead of destructive ones with nothing to gain.

These posts are here to have meaningful conversation and comments without having the need to bash each others choice of platform. – by pc and mac forever! Photoshop for osx (7:55am est fri jan 25 2002) a friend showed me a beta version of photopshop for osx, it was working very well a pretty good port to osx actually. It should not take too long now – by osxisgreat hrmmm no quark users here (2:09pm est fri jan 25 2002) i would hope that quark would see the errors of it's ways rather quickly. Not porting over to osx would be a rather poor choice. Although its not as detrimental now that the classic emulator is a little more steady.

I'd rather not see another software company go under in the current economy, i would never choose quark over pagemaker. Part of that is because i know how to use pagemaker well and quark not so well. (yeah — it is a designer mentality — i don't have enough time to learn a new program.) i have a copy of the first indesign.

So not impressed. Indesgin 2.0 looks so much more promising. – by sera ps on osx (5:32pm est fri jan 25 2002) it will be out this spring, march /april time frame.at least thats what info i was given – by hypoluxa quark user here.

(4:20pm est sat jan 26 2002) i agree that the xpress team is not known for their innovations nor their speediness to revamp. Yet, us print designers aren't lazy.

Unlike new media artist, we depend on pre-press houses and service bureaus to manipulate our files for offset printing. So, we are at their mercy.

On the east coast knowledge of quark is a must. If they can't open indesign, pagemarker, or even upgraded quark files, then all of your work is done in vain.

– by a bit of knowledge money for nothing (8:35am est sun mar 03 2002) i've lost track, how many years did we have to wait for an upgrade? And then this?? My guess is they have kindergarten level programmers, or am i the only one with a clear sight. – by soon to be ex-xpress quark sucks (7:32am est thu jun 27 2002) quark really sucks!

I know it well, i'm actually working for them. Adobe is much better, i just hope in design will really kill quarkxpress/passport. – by xx the resistance is revolting (6:50am est mon aug 26 2002) as a staunch quark user for over 10 years, the ability to integrate quark into a database would be so much more beneficial initiating publication from web-browsers or client servers is much more enticing than this premise of quark being the repository from which i build my web-stuff. We all know the gui made html is umm average, so another co.

Offering it, yeah right. The interface is exactly the same as 92, with a few more tools and this whole we can do photoshop and illustrate is a noble cause, but a long way to go. The integration between organisations and their data is really what it is about, kill the rework. Waiting for dms?? But xml import should be worth a look what a sad add on, looking forward to 5.x but sadly to late for us indesign was waiting. – by aaro leave r&d out of it (2:20pm est mon sep 09 2002) if you want to know why xpress 5.0 isn't carbon, there is one guy to ask. His name is fred and he is now is the sole owner of quark.

5.0 started off a major overhaul of xpress. But almost all of the 4.0 engineers and management quit early on because quark didn't ipo as they were promised during 4.0. Then 4.5 was anounced and a year and a half was wasted on that. Then a major shakeup came down and the r&d management was fired along with the some of the senior engineers. Then more engineers quit. Then tim gill sold out and another round of engineers quit. Then the management that replaced the old mangement was fired and the dms's management was brought in from germany to manage xpress.

Then more engineers quit. Then carbon was dropped to meet the release deadline and the lead engineer working on carbon quit. Then xpress 5.0 was released and sucked. Talk to fred. Xpress is still amazing. I wish it wasn't dying. It was sad to watch it's decline.

– by guess quarkwhy? (7:51pm est tue sep 17 2002) i have been using indesign for a few months now and what can i say – i love it. If you are familiar with any other adobe product, it is easy to become familiar with the layout and shortcuts. If you are a quark user – they have a preference where you can use all of the quark shortcuts which makes the learning curve very simple. I always prefered pagemaker to quark anyway, but indesign has the best of both of them, plus more. Switch, you won't be sorry! – by mac danny quark 5.01 upgrade (2:40pm est wed oct 23 2002) has anyone who owns quark 5. California Drivers License Out Of State Renewal. 0 for macintosh (system 9.1) tried updating to 5.01?

I get errors. – by angela the king is dead (12:55am est tue nov 19 2002) what has been the bench mark of page layout is finally dead, and thank god. Quark changed little all and all over the years and that had been the one saving grace. Print houses knew the file would be straight and that was that. Now indesign blows right by the stagnated xpress. I cant wait untill print houses catch the net and design firms start to licence indesign.

For now keep the faith indesign lovers, pdf final files, and distill them for the cranky printers. All will be well soon. – by emigre-tion quarkxpress (12:04pm est mon nov 25 2002) i think they should worry about print and not the web. The crap they spew onto a web page is rediculous.

They have enough problems with the app in the print industry. I hope they do go under. What's a few more thousand people out of work. Our economy has been in the toilet since 2000 when that dumbass was elected. – by webhed unknown error 51 (2:58pm est fri dec 13 2002) does anyone know what causes unknown error 51. Indesign, here i come! – by jc quark 5.0 errors (3:16pm est mon feb 10 2003) there are 5 of us using this upgrade and we crash, crash, can't save to network, crash when printing and crash some more. If anyone finds out what's going on, please post – by by je quark xpress 5.01 upgrade (11:14am est wed apr 02 2003) does anyone know why this upgrade cannot be installed?

I've tried the pc and mac version. But both cannot install.

I've contacted quark 5 times, in the netherlands, belgium, england and the us of a. Nobody has responded. So, i ordered indesign 2.0, and guess what: quarkxpress 6 is comming out. I say kiss my ass quark, killing yourself was not nessesary, but you just did it!!! Still, if anyone knows how to install the quarkxpress passport 5.01 upgrade, please tell me – by xyonn quark crash os 9.2.2 (4:40pm est tue jun 24 2003) quark 5.01 crashes everytime i try to print from it.

I tried every troubleshooting tactic. It seams to only happen when i place graphics, and they are not corrupted, i tried different ones, and they all work in quark 4.1.

– by deen memory error -108 (6:52am est thu nov 27 2003) does anyone know what this means?? – by olga quark xpress 7.0 (2:39pm est fri jun 18 2004) well all the comments are just about xpress 5.0 which failed in the market.

No one talks about how wonderful is xpress 6.0. I m waiting for xpress 7.0 and the bundles of features it is coming up with.

Did i say adobe come and kiss my ass:-) – by ashy quark 4.1 – unknown error -116 (4:31am est tue jul 20 2004) does anyone know how i can repair a file with this error message??? – by kirstych quark death (5:43pm est tue sep 14 2004) guys, we're human beings. We like visceral products like magazines in our hands that don't blow whistles and ring bells – print media is about simplicity and economy – simple images with meaningful words. Anything more is just masturbating! Sure, in a million years we might integrate with some 3d virtual reality cyber-network at the blink of an eye, but until then there is the basic human existence that prefers things to be held in our hands, layed out well, simply and effectively. Indesign is great, so is photoshop and so are the raft of post-digital-production progs that are singing and dancing all the way to the 3rd-media stage ie. Web and cable download, but as sure as flash has learnt the design lesson that less is more, then then so will quark remain the mainstay of print media.

It's only death knell will be rung by the fickle nature of humanity – the one that wants to be seen to be progressing, the one that will follow the bright lights of the city, only to get there and wish for momma's apple pie, and the girl-next-door's charms. Ok, it's late, and i have a glass of merlot teetering next to my optical mouse, and philosophical debate and dtp meanderings are strange bed-partners, but perhaps, just perhaps this matters to me long live evolution! – by mid mann quark error -51 (9:26am est tue dec 14 2004) what can i do when i get an error -51 message and can't save? Is there anything i can do besides pulling my thumbnails into a new document and praying my work dosen't reflow horribly?

Thanks for advice/recommended places to go for advice... – by saraehr quark 4 (1:38pm est wed feb 02 2005) why ever upgrade to 5?

Quark 4.1 is by far the best program for high end type design – the detail it allows with ease is not found in indesign. I use them both. Sure, if you guys are designing a flyer for your lost cat, then stick to indesign and throw all the dropshadows and hokey crap you want. Bad management or not, i'll stick with quark for the professional work. – by ta hey ta – the world does not hold still (4:16pm est fri feb 04 2005) okay, 4.1 works.

However, our customers have moved on. Quark of course does not give them the option to back save. So we can't open their files. Quark 6 makes pdf files that die on our printers rip.

The only thing keeping us in quark is a group of designers who are deathly afraid of change. If i had my way – it would be indesign right now and goodbye to quark. Let's remember xpress 3 shipped with over 2000 known errors. 4.0 was a $500 upgrade that just fixed some of those errors. They have not provided one meaningful change in any upgrade since. – by gpdahl quark error -51 (6:05pm est mon mar 28 2005) error -51 cannot save file was meant to be folved by upgrading to version 6.01 or higher. I'm running 6.5 and had a problem.

According to quark the problem is with either external or multiple harddrives or antivirus/font software that might be accessing the file. To solve the problem using version 6 save file as a lower version (5), restart and open that file. – by helper error -51 and god does quark suck (9:58pm est wed jul 27 2005) i've just done my first typesetting job in indesign 3 (mac os x) and it's absolutely brilliant. I've done about 50 books in quark. Version 6.5 crashes like a celebrity in an ultralight, i get error -47, error -51 errors, etc. It's just an amateurish piece crap stuck in the mid-90s compared to the slick elegance of indesign. Give indesign a workout and you'll see the difference.

Learn to change. And good riddance to quark! – by dumping quark insufficient disk space?

Many thanks friends! – by brian quark 5.0, out of memory (-108) (9:21am est tue nov 22 2005) what is the fix to out of memory (-108) – by ryan quark error code -51 (4:49am est fri nov 25 2005) opened a quark file from a server. Made alts & tried to save but it gave me -51 error. Closed quark opened it again with the same result.

Then went back to open it again from the server & the quark file had disaappeared. – by al bundy quark error -51, -35 (4:36am est fri jan 13 2006) after installing a new large disc in my g5, i got these errors when attempting to save all quark 6.5 files. I found a solution which fixes the problem for all docs. Make a duplicate copy of any quark doc first eg 'filenamecopy.qxd' and store in a safe backup folder. When saving use a different name – don't overwrite anything if this doesn't work, experiment with saving and/or moving files to different location, either on the same disc or a different volume.

But it is essentially related to saving down to v5 and back up to v6.5 again. – by mark howard error -51 (4:11am est mon jan 16 2006) addendum to last posting. In my case the error was solely connected to autobackup. I ultimately needed to re-specify an autobackup folder after installing the new disc.

This is what fixed the problem. By saving down to v5 this effectively did the job for me, but the bottom line is the path to the autobackup folder had been somehow corrupted on data transfer from old to new disc (despite the path being identical). So, simply re-specify an autobackup folder and all should be fine. It is not necessary to save down to v5. Not sure if this affects autosave behaviour, which i do not use. – by m howard error -43 (11:13am est tue jan 17 2006) does anyone know what this mean in quark4.1. – by ir error -116 (12:25pm est wed feb 08 2006) i see it listed.

How do i find the repair or read what has been written here? – by micheal quark 5.0 “insufficient disk space” when trying to add pages (4:15pm est mon feb 20 2006) i found out how to fix it. – by steve lavrov death to quark (9:34am est fri mar 03 2006) i'm sorry, but i think quark is the worst program ever made. I work a lot with photoshop and illistrator. Adobe was doing a lot of thinking when they came up with the concept of making all of their programs compatable with themseleves and everything else. Quark is terrible at bringing anything in because there is so much crap you have to go through to format pictures and stuff like that.

The only reason why quark is still around is so that adobe dosn't have a monopoly on the market just like corel paint is opposite of adobe photoshop. Adobe will eventually buy them out and i hope they turn their company into a parking lot because that program sucks so bad. It just gets on my nerves that there are some people who still think that quark is great. I'm sorry, but your going to die off just like the dinosaurs did. – by quark killer quark 5.3 (4:35am est fri jun 23 2006) i think this upgrade is a pretty pizza in a habbertat bill that won't lie down or skwock in the night like a pedifogging balloon artist.

What do you think? – by carlos binell quark 5.3.2 (4:39am est fri jun 23 2006) tow pans of pizza in a habbertat bill can t make me squack about a program giving ice caps the night off, anytime.

How did you get it? – by habbertat, bill out of memory [-108] – quark 5.0 (5:14am est wed jul 12 2006) when i open a file or working in file error popup that “out of memory [-108]”. After that i am unable to open that saved file. How can i open that file and how to avoid in other documents? Thiagu out of memory [-108] – quark 5.0 (9:47am est fri jul 28 2006) i am currently writing a new catalog for my employers on a mac. The base files are all quark 5.0.

Everything i edit crashes with the out of memory message then doesn't re-open. The only solution i've found is to save very often, then when the “memory low unable to render picture” message appears, re-boot the mac. Basically, quark 5.0 doesn't release memory as it should, so you are gradually working with less and less until it cant even support the document let alone edits. I am re-saving as quark 4.0 then transferring to in-design cs2. When finished quark and the mac are going into the dumpster from the top floor.

– by steve g moved files (9:34am est fri sep 08 2006) i know this might be way out there, but i work for a company and we had to consolidate and move the files used by quark 6.5 to a newer server. When i did this all the pictures went missing and you have to manually relink all pictures.

This poses and issue as each document has about 50 pics and we have hundereds and hundreds of documents. Does anyone know how or if it is possible to change the direct location, the root path is the same but the server name and share have changed, thus share on server1 now = share on server2 but the rest of the path is the same. Any help would be great?! – by keith h save error, file gone from dir (3:43am est sun sep 10 2006) posted regarding error -51, m. On save quark 6.5 file error, will not save or save as. I am able to open the document up in quark 5.0 but unfortunately, when i tried making corrections and saving or even saving as, it doesn't save any changes i have made and it automatically closes quark.
