Quark announced the release of, which “fuses” tools for print and web design. The long awaited 5.0 features “high-profile features” and capabilities that include tables, layers, webpage design tools, and xml export.
However, the latest release is not carbonized for mac os x. I'm not a print layout designer and have only used quark a few times, but i wonder about the business strategy here. Adobe released indesign 2.0 that runs native on os x.
Indesign 2.0 also sports table creation and xml import/export capabilities like the latest quark release. Quark costs us$899 for the full version and $299 for the upgrade. On the other hand, indesign costs $699 for the full version, $99 for a special 90-day upgrade, and $149 thereafter.
I read quite a few posts on various news boards and it looks like the mac community is rallying behind “quark killer hopeful” indesign. With indesign's tight integration with acrobat, illustrator, and photoshop, i wonder if quark can retain its marketshare. If adobe can get photoshop ported over to os x, i think many print shops might be giving indesign another look. Rob note: ah but when will we see photoshop for os x?

5.0 started off a major overhaul of xpress. But almost all of the 4.0 engineers and management quit early on because quark didn't ipo as they were promised during 4.0. Then 4.5 was anounced and a year and a half was wasted on that. Then a major shakeup came down and the r&d management was fired along with the some of the senior engineers. Then more engineers quit. Then tim gill sold out and another round of engineers quit. Then the management that replaced the old mangement was fired and the dms's management was brought in from germany to manage xpress.
Then more engineers quit. Then carbon was dropped to meet the release deadline and the lead engineer working on carbon quit. Then xpress 5.0 was released and sucked. Talk to fred. Xpress is still amazing. I wish it wasn't dying. It was sad to watch it's decline.

If you are familiar with any other adobe product, it is easy to become familiar with the layout and shortcuts. If you are a quark user – they have a preference where you can use all of the quark shortcuts which makes the learning curve very simple. We like visceral products like magazines in our hands that don't blow whistles and ring bells – print media is about simplicity and economy – simple images with meaningful words. Anything more is just masturbating! Sure, in a million years we might integrate with some 3d virtual reality cyber-network at the blink of an eye, but until then there is the basic human existence that prefers things to be held in our hands, layed out well, simply and effectively. Indesign is great, so is photoshop and so are the raft of post-digital-production progs that are singing and dancing all the way to the 3rd-media stage ie. Web and cable download, but as sure as flash has learnt the design lesson that less is more, then then so will quark remain the mainstay of print media.

Quark 4.1 is by far the best program for high end type design – the detail it allows with ease is not found in indesign. I use them both. Sure, if you guys are designing a flyer for your lost cat, then stick to indesign and throw all the dropshadows and hokey crap you want. However, our customers have moved on. Quark of course does not give them the option to back save. So we can't open their files. Quark 6 makes pdf files that die on our printers rip.
The only thing keeping us in quark is a group of designers who are deathly afraid of change. If i had my way – it would be indesign right now and goodbye to quark. Let's remember xpress 3 shipped with over 2000 known errors. 4.0 was a $500 upgrade that just fixed some of those errors. According to quark the problem is with either external or multiple harddrives or antivirus/font software that might be accessing the file. I've done about 50 books in quark. Version 6.5 crashes like a celebrity in an ultralight, i get error -47, error -51 errors, etc. It's just an amateurish piece crap stuck in the mid-90s compared to the slick elegance of indesign. Give indesign a workout and you'll see the difference.

Made alts & tried to save but it gave me -51 error. Closed quark opened it again with the same result.
Then went back to open it again from the server & the quark file had disaappeared. – by al bundy quark error -51, -35 (4:36am est fri jan 13 2006) after installing a new large disc in my g5, i got these errors when attempting to save all quark 6.5 files. I found a solution which fixes the problem for all docs. Make a duplicate copy of any quark doc first eg 'filenamecopy.qxd' and store in a safe backup folder. When saving use a different name – don't overwrite anything if this doesn't work, experiment with saving and/or moving files to different location, either on the same disc or a different volume.
But it is essentially related to saving down to v5 and back up to v6.5 again. – by mark howard error -51 (4:11am est mon jan 16 2006) addendum to last posting. In my case the error was solely connected to autobackup. I ultimately needed to re-specify an autobackup folder after installing the new disc.
This is what fixed the problem. By saving down to v5 this effectively did the job for me, but the bottom line is the path to the autobackup folder had been somehow corrupted on data transfer from old to new disc (despite the path being identical). So, simply re-specify an autobackup folder and all should be fine. It is not necessary to save down to v5. The only reason why quark is still around is so that adobe dosn't have a monopoly on the market just like corel paint is opposite of adobe photoshop. Everything i edit crashes with the out of memory message then doesn't re-open. The only solution i've found is to save very often, then when the “memory low unable to render picture” message appears, re-boot the mac. Basically, quark 5.0 doesn't release memory as it should, so you are gradually working with less and less until it cant even support the document let alone edits. I am re-saving as quark 4.0 then transferring to in-design cs2. When finished quark and the mac are going into the dumpster from the top floor.

This poses and issue as each document has about 50 pics and we have hundereds and hundreds of documents. Does anyone know how or if it is possible to change the direct location, the root path is the same but the server name and share have changed, thus share on server1 now = share on server2 but the rest of the path is the same.
